Got a pocket knife when I was 9
With a blade as sharp as a razor
Cut through the bark of a back yard tree
Like writing my name on paper
My sister kept a journal
Which was cool if you're a girl
So I came up with a big idea
For my own little world
I'd use the knife dad gave me
Scratch out what I did lately
Into the sycamores behind the house
Made a target for my slingshot
Drew the biggest fish that I caught
My life in every notch that I carved out
Swiss army tally marks
For homeruns in little league
Some stories are written in the stars
But mine is written in the trees
This one's dated 9/14
'Cause that's the first day that I saw her
Her family moved in from out of state
This one here's from the day that I got her
To say yes to a movie
And this one's our first kiss
I couldn't write out every moment
'Cause I loved every bit
You can trace it with your finger
Feel the plans getting bigger
Than a kid in little league could ever dream
This backyards full of pages
And proof that through the ages
What we got is near evergreen
That shaky line of a heart
Filled in with you + me
Some stories are written in the stars
But mine is written in the trees
Laying in the shade of all the places that I've been
Ain't too bad a way to walk down memory lane again
They're still there in the bark
These weathered memories
Some stories are written in the stars
But mine is written in the trees
