Original lyrics
ENRunnin' down the long way
On a southbound track
Leave that old life behind me
And I won't be lookin' back
'Cause when the mornin's callin'
I'm gonna ride that train
Ain't no chains to hold me
When I ride that train
Searchin' for an "empty"
On an outbound track
And I'll be hoppin' freights til sundown
With just the rags on my back
When the north wind's callin'
I'm gonna ride that train
I've got my pass to freedom
When I ride that train
I'll take the main line thru the canyon
Where I can find my soul
"The Iron Road" is all I know
Where really free men feel at home
